PRESS RELEASE: Impact on Canal at Fradley Junction Greatly Reduced as Government Adopts Joint IWA/CRT Proposal to Change HS2 Route

Find out more about the HS2 Campaign
Issue date: 2nd October 2014

The Secretary of State for Transport, Patrick McLoughlin MP, yesterday (1st October 2014) announced that the Government is adopting The Inland Waterways Association (IWA) and Canal & River Trust (CRT) proposals to re-align the route of HS2.  The new route avoids much of the popular and historic Fradley Junction to Woodend area of the Trent & Mersey Canal, and the need for a large worksite alongside the Coventry Canal between Streethay and Huddlesford.  Assurances have also been given that HS2 will ensure that restoration of the Lichfield Canal can continue.

Safety Improvements (Full automation of bridge)

From 5th September Kier Major Works Team, the Trust’s main contractor, will begin work on safety improvements which will last for approximately 4 weeks. The works will fully automate the bridge with new road barriers and warnings for highways users, removing the need for boaters to move the barriers in the future.

During this period, the bridge will be in the up position allowing boats to pass through unhindered, removing the need to stop and operate the bridge.

Please note that towards the end of the contract, during the commissioning of the bridge, there will be a need to place a temporary restriction on navigation for one or two days . Further details on this will be issued nearer the date.

Original message:

Following the movement of Shireoaks visitor moorings from within the marina to the towpath area on the main canal outside, our contractors will be fencing the old visitor provision off from Monday 28th July 2014.

Once fenced off, the remaining moorings along this area will require a permit from the Moorings Team and will become part of the wider berth holder only moorings within the marina.

Further to these works being carried out, the sanitary station will also be fenced off from the main marina at the same time, with a gated entrance being introduced from the towpath for visitors use.

A further gate will be installed for access into the marina with regards to refuse disposal. These gates will be covered by a standard CRT lock, the same as that customers use to access the facilities block.

Further boating access from next to the facilities block will remain for water and pump-out. During the period of works, all facilities will remain open for customer use. Please note, however, that short waiting times may ensue when using the facilities dependent upon what stage our contractors are with their works.

We ask that you observe any instruction or signage from our contractors as a matter of Health and Safety.

Thank you in advance for your patience if using the facilities at Shireoaks Marina during this transitional period.

Should you require further information regarding this project, please contact Rob Taylor – Moorings Manager on 03030 404040.
