On Saturday 15 November the Trust’s ecologist Stuart Collins will be holding a free ‘Birding for Beginners’ course teaching people how to identify different species of bird.

The course is aimed at showing birdwatchers what to look out for through the changing seasons. On Sunday the Trust’s ‘Explorers’ education team will be teaching families how to make simple feeders helping birds through the winter months.

The team will also be leading some fun bird-spotting activities and helping families to collect leaves which they can use to create special Autumn crowns. The ‘Explorers’ programme is aimed at teaching kids all about the history and wildlife of their local canals as well as how to enjoy them safely.

The event is run by volunteers and is part of a monthly programme of things to do at Fradley Junction. More information The Birding for Beginners course takes place from 9:00 on Saturday 15 November.

We’re holding an open day on the Oxford Canal so that you can pop down and meet our friendly maintenance team.
During November and December we’re going to replace three sets of lock gates on the Oxford Canal. While we’ve got the canal drained we’ll also repair a number of gates between lock 10 and lock 14. Lock 10, which needed an emergency stoppage over the summer after the pound wall collapsed, will have extensive brickwork repairs and a complete rebuild of the pound wall.
The Open Day will be on Saturday 8 November at Lock 8 between 10am and 4pm. You’ll be able to step down into the drained lock to inspect the works taking place, talk to our maintenance team and find out what it takes to keep our historic waterways in working order.
Why not bring the whole family? This is a rare chance to get a behind-the-scenes look at one of our most popular canals.

Discover more about the lives of “Idle Women” working on the waterways during World War II.
Poet Heather Wastie is set to showcase the lives of women working on the waterways during World War II with a live performance of a poem written to celebrate “Idle Women”.
“Idle Women” was the name given to women who took over the working boats while the men went out to war.
Heather’s poem is based on the wartime memories of three “Idle Women”, Emma Smith, Nancy Ridgway and Daphne March (Daffy). The poem broadly tells the women’s story, from recruitment to redundancy, using their own descriptions. Because of the war, these women had “crossed a line” into a completely new world and the piece takes the listener into that world.
Heather will perform her poem in costume on the hour from 11am – 3pm on the second floor of the museum. Come along and discover more about the lives of these inspirational women.

Come and see behind the scenes at the Historic Crofton Pumping Station this winter, when our teams of dedicated volunteers cosset and maintain the two historic beam engines.
The Pumping Station will be open free of charge on the following days from 10:30 to 15:30.

This winter we are giving visitors a rare chance to see maintenance works in progress,
when we dismantle parts of the engines normally hidden from view.

The event will bring to life the key role that the canals, waterways and ports played during the days of the Second World War. Re-enactors will recreate scenes and activities of events that would have taken place during the wartime period with original and reproduction equipment and vehicles.

The entertainment will continue into the evening with a WWII Victory Party.

This… is remarkable. I’m just going to leave it here for those among us interested in Chasewater, and the arrangements with the steam pump that used to return water from Anglesey Basin into the reservoir.

There has been a lot of debate about this subject in the past, and courtesy of reader and contributor Ruth Penrhyn-Lowe, we have the clearest scan ever of a remarkable postcard, which gives far more detail than previously seen.

She kindly sent a whole bunch of new cards, which I’ll feature later today, but this one, in light of previous debate, is very special and deserves attention.

Three day festival of beer, banter and boats.
The National Waterways Museum annual beer festival, organised in conjunction with Liverpool Organic Brewery, will run from Friday 10th October to Sunday 12th October 2014.
Throughout the weekend a range of beers from breweries across the country will be available; from Cornwall’s Keltek through to Middlesborough’s Truefitt including creatively named beers from the Potbelly Brewery in Northampton who will be supplying ‘Captain Pigwash’ and ‘Pigs Do Fly’!
John Inch, National Waterways Museum general manager, Canal & River Trust said: “With 30 beers supplied by Liverpool Organic Brewery, including a few guest ales and five ciders from Lilley’s Cider, we’re set to have a fantastic weekend here at the museum.”
Prices
Tickets are £10 in exchange for £10 worth of beer vouchers and are available in advance or on the day.

The Museum has good public transport links, being only a few minutes’ walk from the railway station and for groups who have organised a designated driver the museum is just off junction 9 of the M53. Moorings for the weekend are available – please contact the museum direct on 0151 355 5017.

Ever wanted to know more about the Oxford Canal Trail?
Join us on Sunday 12 October at Wolvercote Green for a short presentation by the Oxford Canal Heritage project team.
To see the city’s historic canal past, take the 5k heritage trail, there are a variety of places to stop along the way, including pubs, shops and gardens; more notably you will come across Hythe Bridge, Isis Lock, Ball’s Bridge, Walton Well Bridge and many more.
There is an audio guide also available, please ask somebody from the heritage team for more information.
Getting there:
You can park in the Pear Tree Park and Ride and walk to Ball’s Bridge. You can also get the bus to Woodstock Road, cross the road to First Turn, following the road to Wolvercote Green.
If you don’t mind paying, feel free (!) to park in Worcester Street, Oxford for an even closer space.

Boat trips, crafts, demonstrations and musical entertainment promise to make Banbury Canal Day go with a swing.
The Mill Arts centre will be opening its doors for a day of entertainment, food and drink, and a free folk concert will be held by General Foods Garden adjacent to the towpath.
Boat trips will be taking plave from Sovereign Wharf, with barrel organs entertaining those waiting to board. Don’t forget to stop by Tooley’s historic boatyard for a display of engines and boats, with a chance to watch a blacksmith at work.
As well as all of the above, Banbury Canal Day offers falconry, fairground rides and enough food and drink outlets to keep hunger firmly at bay.

The Oxford Canal is a 78-mile-long (126 km) narrow canal linking Oxford with Coventry via Banbury and Rugby. It connects with the River Thames at Oxford, to the Grand Union Canal at the villages of Braunston and Napton-on-the-Hill, and to the Coventry Canal at Hawkesbury Junction in Bedworth just north of Coventry.  The canal was once an important artery of trade between the English Midlands and London, and is now highly popular among pleasure boaters.

An annual boating festival held in the picturesque Bumble-Hole Nature Reserve.
An annual boating festival held at Bumble Hole Nature Reserve, Windmill End, Netherton. The event has been running for almost 30 years, and is run entirely by volunteers. It has raised over £100,000 for charity over its history.
There are more than 200 boat, trade and charity stalls, boaters’ competitions, a real ale bar, a funfair and regular boat trips.
The festival is open from 10am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday, admission to the site is free and there is plenty of onsite car parking.
There are moorings for visitors attending by boat, and caravans and campers are welcome, but if you may need to book a spot.

This September budding heritage buffs and canal enthusiasts will be able to get up close to the nation’s waterway heritage and find out more about the history of the canals in the West Midlands and Black Country.
As part of the events for Heritage Open Days 2014 the charity, Canal & River Trust, working in partnership with Sandwell Council and the Dudley Canal Trust, is offering free entry to two of the region’s best loved canal side destinations.
Starting at 10am on Saturday 13 September visitors to Galton Valley in Smethwick will be able to see the old Smethwick Pumping Station and the old steam engines which were used to pump water around the Birmingham Mail Line Canal. Meeting near Brasshouse Lane (B66 1DU) eager explorers will have the chance to take part in a nature walk and see how working boat people used to live and work at the height of the Industrial Revolution.
On Sunday 14 September from 10:30am visitors can explore the famous Dudley Tunnel & Limestone Mines, travel by boat through the tunnels and discover the wonder of the limestone caverns. They’ll also get the opportunity to enjoy a music and light show in the famous Singing Cavern and see the fossilised remains of creatures and plants which were once in the sea bed.
