Skatepark opens, while landscaping works continue

Local skaters can now practise their tricks at Lichfield’s brand new skatepark in Beacon Park!

Following the completion of the first phase of the project, Lichfield District Council has opened Beacon Park’s skatepark, which can now be used by skaters.

The second phase of the project got underway in February, which includes landscaping the area with grass, trees and plants. This will continue throughout March.

Councillor Andrew Smith, Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure & Parks, said: “We’re still putting the finishing touches to the skatepark but know that skaters are itching to use the facility so we’ve opened it up to them earlier than planned, while we complete the landscaping. We hope everyone enjoys using it, but we would ask everyone to keep to the paths when getting to and from the skatepark, to give the grass a good start.”

The ribbon will be cut to mark the official opening of Beacon Park’s Skatepark on Saturday 5 April 2014 from 12 noon. This will be followed by a showcase of skateboarding by pro-skaters. Everyone is welcome to come to the opening to enjoy the skating.

“We’re all looking forward to formally launching the new skatepark in April which will be a chance to once again thank all the organisations that have helped to make this facility a reality.”

Beacon Park’s skatepark has been funded by section 106 capital, The Veolia Environmental Trust, Lichfield City Council, Staffordshire Local Community Fund, and Lichfield District Safer Community Partnership. Lichfield District Council also contributed towards the landscaping.

The skatepark are will be regularly inspected, but if anyone has any concerns, they can contact the council’s parks team on 01543 308867 or email parks@lichfielddc.gov.uk

Celebrating 40 years of Beacon Park’s golf course

A special day of festivities will take place this March to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of Beacon Park’s golf course.

Lichfield District Council is inviting everyone to tee-off at Beacon Park’s golf course on Sunday 23 March, between 9am and 3pm, to take part in a special 18-hole round of golf.

On the day, Robert Rock Golf Academy will offer free PGA professional tuition on the first tee, to help golfers with their swing.

There will also be the chance to enter a golf tournament to be in with a chance of winning a selection of prizes. The competition will be judged in three age categories: 12 and under, 13 to 17, and 18 plus.

Councillor Andy Smith, Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure & Parks, said:
“Beacon Park is such a special place to enjoy a round of golf, with its central location and beautiful surroundings.

“We hope this celebratory day will encourage more people to take up the game, and that they take advantage of the chance to have expert golfing tuition, the discounted prices, and the chance to win prizes.

“I would like to thank the Swinfen Broun Charitable Trust who helped to fund the golf course in 1974, in what was one of the trust’s first major projects. It has given enjoyment to keen golfers over the decades and we hope the golf course will be enjoyed for years to come.”

To take part in the golfing fun will cost £2.60 for children and concessions, and £4.10 for adults or £3.60 with a LAP membership. If needed, equipment can be hired from £1.50 (which includes a club, a ball and a deposit of £1).

About the golf course

Green Flag accredited Beacon Park offers a mature 18-hole pitch and putt, par 3 golf course, with holes ranging from 90 yards to 110 yards.

The golf course is open every day (subject to conditions), except for Christmas Day.

Games do not need to be booked, and are paid for at the park’s Ranger Station (which is the kiosk between Lakeside Bistro and the crazy golf course).

An 18-hole round of golf costs £7.80 for adults and £3.90 for children, and discounts are available with a LAP membership.

Players can use their own golf clubs, or they can be hired when paying for the round. It costs £1.50 a club, which includes a ball and a deposit of £1.

The Chairman of Lichfield District Council hoisted the Commonwealth flag as part of the Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth celebrations this March.

Lichfield District Council joined more than 500 local authorities, charities and community groups throughout the United Kingdom for the first time in simultaneously raising the Commonwealth flag at 10am today (Monday 10 March 2014).

Councillor David Leytham, Chairman of Lichfield District Council, invited guests, including the City Mayor and Sheriff, to take part in the flag raising ceremony at District Council House.

The ceremony included the Chairman and guests affirming their support for the values shared by the Commonwealth’s 53 member countries, before the flag was raised by the Chairman at 10am.

Councillor Leytham said: “We were delighted to join in the Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth celebrations. Being a part of the flag raising ceremony and flying the flag offers everyone a good opportunity to think about the Commonwealth and what it means to be part of a wider international community.”
