Learn to love Lichfield this summer

A new display aimed at inspiring young minds has been launched at Lichfield Tourist Information Centre in St Mary’s this July.
As part of a project, Year 4 children from The Willows Primary School in Lichfield have been on a mission to promote the city as an exciting place for families with children to visit.
Having researched Lichfield’s attractions, the 8 to 9 year olds designed and made a variety of child-friendly materials, such as games, jigsaws, information cards and posters that are based around the attractions.
A selection of the materials they produced are on display at the new home of the Tourist Information Centre, at St Mary’s on the Market Square, and are available for families to borrow throughout the summer holidays.
Councillor Val Richards, Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure, Communications & Tourism, said: “All the children have worked so hard on this display and it looks wonderful. Children visiting St Mary’s are welcome to borrow any of the materials for free, in the hope that they will become as interested in Lichfield’s historical buildings and leisure facilities as the pupils from The Willows are. We only ask that any borrowed games or materials are returned to the Tourist Information Centre for other children to use.”
As part of the display, families can pop into the Tourist Information Centre to pick up information about what there is to do across Lichfield District during the summer holidays, including attractions, events, clubs and leisure activities. The leaflet, Minster Trail, is also on sale for 60p. It is aimed at children between 5 and 12 years of age and leads families on a tour of Lichfield, explaining interesting facts along the way, including burnings at the stake and Civil War shootings.
A variety of general toys and games are also available for just £1 at the gift shop as part of the summer holiday pocket money sale.

There are specific pages that describe the history and development of the site, lists all the forthcoming events together with details of the recent successful Heritage Lottery Fund Grant that shows the main proposed works.
Presently the Park encompasses a range of facilities including children’s play area, skateboard park, tennis courts, football pitches and pavilion with changing rooms. There are mature trees and shrubs and masses of open spaces for users to relax in. There are Park Keepers on duty during all park opening hours.

Over the next few years there will be a lot of works carried out on the site. There is a draft programme that sets out when these will occur and there will be separate site works pages that will give more detailed information on the specific works and how these are progressing. We hope to update this aspect on a weekly basis but please bear with us if this takes a little longer.
As part of the Hednesford Town Centre Regeneration major works were carried out to Victoria Street which resulted in the loss of the main park access and creation of new access points to the park as well as new fencing. These works are ongoing and whilst coordinated to fit with the requirements of the park and the HLF proposals, they are being carried out by independant contractors as part of the regeneration works.
