W. Martley’s last express class for the LCDR and probably the best known of all his engines.  Four of them, Nos.53 Europe, 54 Asia, 55 Africa and 56 America were built in 1873, and two more, Nos. 57 and 58 (unnamed) appeared in 1876 after William Kirtley had succeeded Martley.

They became known as the ‘Mail’ engines, and for many years worked the Continental boat trains between Victoria and Dover.  They became SECR Nos. 51207 at the 1899 amalgamation and were broken up between 1907 and 1909.
