I believe rail travel will enjoy a resurrection in this country on the merits of its ability to convey the masses economically, unlike the individual conduit afforded on our ageing and clogged-up roads. A gradual return to a fully integrated rail (and bus travel essentially) network, to necessitate a move away from an over-reliance on car travel (which will become cost prohibitive) will be a commonsensical triumph over five decades of self-indulgence. The days of private travel has already peaked and is surely numbered, save for a miraculous new energy discovery. The independent mode of getting from A to B will become the preserve of the rich, as the nations majority will conform to a mindset based on 'collective' travel.
Take the journey time by train from Grange to Ulverston, for example, that takes little more than 10 mins. Via the A590 you will be lucky to complete this same journey in double the time, and nearer treble the time in rush-hour (an obsolete term really, when you consider rush implies the whole day!) traffic
So my point is this, not only do I hold optimism for a rail link extension from Haverthwaite to Greenodd, and far from being an attack of drivelling romanticism, I also share belief the route will continue on to Ulverston, nay even branch off to Coniston!

Hi Geoff, I take your point and although this is not a 'Chasewater Railway' site as such, as you can tell by some of the canal and other content, I have put the information about finding the Railway on the front page as you suggested.
Cheers, John CWS
