A significant leak through the embankment at Tardebigge New Wharf means we have had to temporarily close the canal. We’ve installed a dam at Bridge 57A Tardebigge Old Wharf to secure the canal. A further dam will be installed today next to the leak to allow water to be removed from a short section, so that we can determine the cause of the problem and decide on the best way to repair it.

The work will continue over the weekend and if all goes well it may be possible to open the navigation on Monday.

A further update will be issued Monday morning.

Boaters in the area are advised to be aware of the closure and plan their journeys accordingly.

Update on 14/03/2014:

Engineers have now been able to fully assess the problems to the bridge. The faults are preventing the bridge from operating safely and due to the location and nature of the fault the Trust have not been able to carry out the necessary repairs today.

Unfortunately, because the bridge cannot be used, the navigation is closed until at least 10am on Tuesday 18th March. Major repairs will be required to the bridge next week, the Trust are looking into how limited navigation can be safely provided until the full extent of the repairs are completed.

To help those boating customers planning to travel along the Caldon through this location next week, please can they contact the Central Shires local Waterway office on 0303 0404040 to advise the date of travel and contact details so that we can keep them informed and to manage passage through the bridge site.

Please be re-assured that the Trust is working towards re-opening the bridge at the earliest opportunity and further notices will be issued to keep customers informed.

During the summer of 2013 we recorded significant water loss through the bottom gate at Lock 11, Aston. This led to some boaters experiencing difficulty moving through the flight. Notice Alert

 Worcester & Birmingham Canal. – 036

 Monday 16 December 2013 08:00 until Wednesday 5 March 2014 16:00

 Type: Navigation Restriction

Reason: Vegetation

The Canal & River Trust will be investing £68k in tree management on your local waterways in Worcestershire between Monday 16th December 2013 to Wednesday 5th March 2014.

A total of 7714m of offside cutting works have been identified on the Worcester & Birmingham canal. They will be starting from Wast Hill Tunnel Southern Portal and working towards Worcester.

The work aims to open up the navigation to maximise visibility specifically on bends, and in the vicinity of structures, in order to ensure safety for boaters.

We advise all canal users to approach the areas where tree works are being undertaken with caution and to follow any warning notices which may be in effect.

The works consist of cutting back overhanging vegetation to waters’ edge up to a maximum of 5m in height. Trees growing from the waterway wall or at the waters’ edge will also be removed if they are creating a navigational hazard.

A non-powered floating platform will be in place, with the cutting works using pole saws, chain saws and hand tools. The cut vegetation will be placed primarily on the offside of the canal on Canal and River Trust owned land.

The works will be delivered through our National Vegetation and Environmental Services Contractors.

Amended Stoppage: Shropshire Union Canal

Emergency Stoppage at Bridge 133 to 136 (Backford/Stoak/Little Stanney)

Saturday 9 November 2013 until further notice

UPDATE (29 November 2013): The works at bridge 135 Little Stanney have progressed very well since our last report, our engineers constructed access into the bed of the canal, removed debris from the bed and the culvert in preparation for the damaged culvert to be repaired as required. We have however identified another defective culvert at Bridge 133 Backford Bridge in Chester that we would now like to access and investigate further whilst the current stoppage is in place at bridge 135 Little Stanney.

We have therefore now installed two more fabric dams at Backford Bridge to enable us to isolate the culvert there, this will ensure we can complete works at both locations simultaneously thus reducing the time frame required to complete the works and reducing the impact to our customers. Until we have accessed the culvert directly we are unable to provide a detailed time frame for the works but we do have a target date of 3 weeks to complete the works to ensure the waterway is reopened to navigation prior to the Christmas holiday.

The local waterway team will be managing an over pumping system to maintain water levels to as near normal as possible for the duration of the works whilst our engineers continue the repairs using the support of specialist contract teams. Should they be required the nearest winding hole to the North of bridge 136 is at bridge 140a Stanney Bridge and the nearest service station facilities are located at the National Waterways Museum at Ellesmere Port. To the South of bridge 133 Backford Bridge both winding facilities and service station are located at Northgate Basin Chester.

A further update on progress with a more accurate time frame for completion will be posted week commencing 16th December 2013, but should you require any additional information please do not hesitate to contact us at any time on 07885 281 688.

Amended Stoppage: Caldon Canal

Stockton Brook Locks 5, 6 & 8
